SB 3484 Signed by Governor
Ride Illinois is pleased to share that SB 3484 – Illinois’ Sensible Micromobility Regulations legislation – was signed into law by Governor Pritzker on August 26, 2026.
Ride Illinois has been advocating for this legislation for well over a year. Our organization has been proactive in crafting a state-level solution that embraces new mobility modes while retaining a focus on public safety. We established three key goals in spring of 2025 – all of which are achieved through SB 3484:
Clearly distinguish between legal classes of e-bikes and devices with electric motors that look like bicycles
Develop a state-level solution to embrace micromobility devices that nullifies the patchwork of confusing municipal ordinances
Establish a minimum age for certain micromobility devices and require a license, registration, and insurance for high-speed devices
Our Micromobility Guidance proved to be a valuable resource for municipalities in lieu of state legislation. Ride Illinois will continue to encourage municipalities and local agencies to integrate low-speed e-bikes, low-speed e-scooters, and micromobility devices into their transportation network, infrastructure, and trails.
